As You Like It

1936, Belper Memorial Gardens

By William Shakespeare

Our first production. A local newspaper reported that a new company, the Belper Players, had been formed to put on Shakespeare's As You Like It in the open air at the Memorial Gardens in June 1936.

Godfrey W. Ford started the company and produced the play. The management committee was H. K. Carser (chairman), D. Litchfield (secretary), A. Stevenson (treasurer) and Mr Ford. If the play went well, the plan was to put on more productions and give the money raised to local charities.

Newspaper cutting headed "Belper Players: new company formed for open-air performance", announcing As You Like It at the Memorial Gardens, Belper, in June
